A brilliant Monza side wins 3-0 away at Sampdoria and goes to sleep at the top of the table alongside Venezia, provisionally moving three points clear of Frosinone.
There was a fiery atmosphere at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, with nearly 30,000 fans pushing the home side, but the biancorossi were not intimidated and immediately took control, winning several corners. From one of these at 5’, Delli Carri headed the ball and Patrick Cutrone pounced, volleying it home with his right foot. A true striker’s finish from the number 10, who scores his fourth goal in a Monza shirt. A devastating start from AC Monza, catching Sampdoria off guard. At 10’, Andrea Colpani struck a long-range free kick with his left foot that crashed against the crossbar. The second goal was only minutes away: at 13’, Obiang won the ball in defense and launched a perfect counterattack. Cutrone then set up Giuseppe Caso, who raced forward and slotted past Martinelli with a low right-footed shot. His first goal in a Monza shirt made it 0-2 and showcased Monza’s brilliance.
Sampdoria struggled to mount a concrete response in the heated atmosphere, while the visitors kept pushing. At 20’, Samuele Birindelli missed the target with a header from a Ravanelli cross. Three minutes later, he made another run, controlling with his right foot and shooting with his left, narrowly missing the third goal. Coach Paolo Bianco substituted the booked Lucchesi with Carboni at 26’. Monza continued to play well and chased a third goal, with Birindelli coming close again at 27’, this time with a right-footed shot on the run from a brilliant pass by Colpani. Sampdoria had a chance at 32’, but Brunori’s long-range effort was off target. At 42’, Esposito tested Thiam with a free kick, but the goalkeeper was alert.
It was an exciting and vibrant match, with two more clear chances for Monza before halftime. At 43’, Delli Carri rose for a header from a corner and Cutrone attacked the ball again, but it went just wide. After Henderson failed to hit the target with a volley, at 46’ Caso controlled a cross from Bakoune and struck it on the volley, coming very close to scoring his second. Monza went into the break leading 2–0.
At the start of the second half, Ciurria replaced the injured Delli Carri. Sampdoria tried to change the script by pressing higher early on. At 56’, Bianco brought on Colombo and Petagna. Sampdoria created a chance the same minute, with Pierini hitting the post from a free kick. Colpani responded two minutes later, striking first-time after a Henderson mistake and hitting the post himself with a left-footed shot; on the rebound, Colombo forced a save from Martinelli. At 66’, Bianco made a forced substitution, bringing on Hernani for Cutrone. Sampdoria kept fighting and at 68’ Thiam made a brilliant save on a close-range effort from Pierini, tipping it out for a corner. Monza defended well and controlled the match.
The exclamation mark on a perfect evening came at 85’ from Andrea Petagna, who produced a stunning piece of skill. From a Bakoune cross, the striker controlled the ball with his chest, turned and volleyed it with his left foot. A spectacular goal, his eighth of the season, that sent the 700 away fans into raptures. In the closing moments, Monza nearly scored a fourth through Hernani. It ended 3-0 for the biancorossi, just like their last meeting away at Sampdoria in Serie A.
It’s a second crucial consecutive win for Bianco’s team, who will return to action on Friday, April 24th at 7:00 PM against Modena at the U-Power Stadium.
