LEAGUE LEADERS PULL AWAY: MONZA-CESENA 1-0 AND SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

With Obiang’s first goal in the biancorosso shirt, Monza wins the big match against Cesena 1-0 and claims their seventh consecutive victory. The league leaders gain points on their closest rivals and also confirm themselves as the best defence in the league, keeping a clean sheet for the fourth match in a row.

A spectacular choreography greeted the opening whistle at the U-Power Stadium, coloured entirely in red-and-white, and Bianco’s team started strong. At 2' the Cesena defence stopped a rampant Dany Mota at the last moment. The Portuguese forward tried again at 9' with an acrobatic volley, but without luck. Monza patiently tried to break down the Romagnol side’s resistance, also with long-range efforts such as Obiang’s shot at 24'. A minute later, a dangerous turn from Alvarez saw his right-footed shot go close to the opener. After another effort from distance by Colpani, Cesena showed themselves at 32' with a low shot from Blesa that didn’t trouble Thiam. Monza resumed weaving their play and broke the deadlock at 37'. Azzi surged forward and played the ball to the left for Dany Mota, who sent in a low cross for Obiang to finish with a brilliant move. He controlled and placed the ball into the corner with his right instep. It was the midfielder’s first goal for Monza, sending the U-Power Stadium into raptures. Cesena reacted with a left-footed shot from Frabotta that went off target at 43'. Before the interval, Monza were dangerous again with another burst from Azzi, this time on the right, stopped at the last moment by the visitors. The hosts deservedly went into halftime in front.

Cesena tried to increase their attacking pressure at the start of the second half. At 54', Berti’s dangerous cross-shot went wide. Monza responded at 59' when Azzi came close to a decisive touch on Izzo’s fine cross. Bianco made his first substitution at 61', sending on Ciurria. At 64', an Obiang-led counterattack set up Dany Mota, who went down after contact with Zaro. The home side appealed for what looked like a clear penalty, but the referee disagreed and play went on. At 68', Dany Mota tried a powerful long-range shot that went wide. A minute later, Bianco brought on Maric and Colombo. Cesena found an equaliser at 70' through Shpendi, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review. The U-Power Stadium erupted and almost celebrated a second goal at 73', when a right-footed strike from the tireless Azzi was deflected for a corner. Cesena didn’t give up and at 81' Shpendi forced Azzi into action, the Monza player doing well to parry the close-range left-footed effort from the visiting Number 9. On the resulting corner, Zaro rose highest but headed over. Bianco used his last substitutions, sending on Lucchesi and Delli Carri for the final stages. At 95', Demba Thiam sealed the result with a great save on Berti.

It finished 1-0 for Monza, that celebrates the fifth win in six home matches and extends the record winning streak in Serie B. In the next round, the league leaders will play away at Juve Stabia on Sunday, 30th November at 3:00 PM.
