In the 28th matchday of Serie A, Inter defeated a strong Monza 3-2, with the visitors scaring the league leaders at San Siro, losing by a 'centimeter,' which made all the difference on the decisive goal in the 78th minute.
A great start from the white-and-reds, who took the field with personality and courage. After a balanced start, in the 7th minute, former player Keita fired a dangerous right-foot shot that narrowly missed. Inter struggled to create concrete chances until the 22nd minute, when Turati made a fantastic save, diving to deflect Arnautovic's header. The white-and-red goalkeeper then saved Lautaro two minutes later before the Inter captain netted the ball. However, the goal was ruled out by VAR for Lautaro's handball. In the 31st minute, from a corner on the left, Barella took a volley, but Turati blocked it. Monza remained alive and struck in the 32nd minute. Birindelli exchanged passes with Dany Mota, who cleverly opened up the corridor for the Tuscan full-back, who then calmly finished past Martinez for 0-1. It was Birindelli's second Serie A goal, having also scored against Juventus on December 22. Inter responded in the 36th minute when Bastoni sent a header wide from a right-wing corner. However, Monza remained dangerous on the attack, and in the 44th minute, a stunning 0-2 arrived. Keita fired a brilliant shot into the far post, marking his first goal in the white-and-red shirt on his 30th birthday.
Before halftime, Inter got back into the game with a goal from Arnautovic, who took advantage of Dumfries' assist during injury time. The league leaders tried to start strong in the second half, but Monza had a superb Turati, who denied Dumfries’ shot in the 51st minute. Nesta's team defended well and played efficiently when passing the ball. Inter seemed to be struggling, but in the 64th minute, they suddenly equalized with Calhanoglu's powerful shot, which was unstoppable for Turati. Nesta made a double substitution, bringing on Lekovic and Ganvoula. Monza still believed and, in the 70th minute, Bianco tested Martinez with a long-range left-foot shot. Inter responded at the 76th minute with a right-foot attempt from new entrant Thuram, which grazed the crossbar. Nesta also brought on Caprari. The game was wide open. In the 78th minute, Turati made an incredible save to deny Lautaro Martinez, but just barely, the ball had crossed the line, and Inter found the 3-2. A single centimeter changed the course of the match. The Nerazzurri regained enthusiasm after suffering for so long against Monza: in the 83rd minute, Thuram hit the post, and Turati was quick to save on the rebound. Nesta made final changes, introducing Brorsson and Vignato for the hot finish. Calhanoglu tried again in the 89th minute with a powerful shot, but Turati was phenomenal with a corner save. Inter won 3-2, but Monza left the pitch with their heads held high.
