In the opening match of the third day of Serie B, Avellino defeats Monza 2-1.
On the Partenio-Lombardi synthetic turf, the ball flows quickly from the start in a high-tempo opening. At 11', Birindelli bursts down the right and crosses where Caprari is somehow anticipated by Enrici. The number 10 protests in vain for a push by the defender. At 19', on a poisonous cross from Galazzi, Birindelli steals the ball from Iannarilli and centers again where Caprari brushes the edge of the goal from a difficult position. Monza attacks and gives no space to the hosts. But at 31' Avellino opens the scoring from a set piece. A free kick from the left by Sounas, a flick-on for Simic who slots in from close range in the scramble. The last unlucky touch is Azzi’s. The Wolves gain confidence and at 38' Missori threatens on the right with a nice move: dribble and a final shot that whistles wide. The Irpini crowd pushes the team hard in the first home match in Serie B after 7 years. Insigne tries a curving shot for a spectacular goal, but without luck. Monza searches for the equalizer and pushes forward. Before the interval, a prolonged scramble in the biancoverde area, with Azzi being anticipated at the moment of the shot.
In the second half, the biancorossi also start attacking. After less than a minute, Obiang takes aim and curtails a left-footed shot that goes just wide. At 57’, Monza would level with Birindelli who scores from a Delli Carri flick, but the goal is ruled off for a foul by Lucchesi on Sounas, amid protests from the Brianzoli. Bianco’s team presses in search of the 1-1. At 63’, a dangerous cross from Birindelli is met by no one and Iannarilli saves. The Tuscan winger of Monza is always lurking and at 64’ narrowly misses the decisive header on the second ball. The away side attacks relentlessly, troubling Avellino with crosses from the flanks. Bianco makes his first substitutions at 66’ introducing Álvarez and Ciurria. The Wolves try to breathe with a counterattack break by Crespi, who shoots high at 68’. Another double substitution at 72’ for the biancorossi with Keita and Maric entering the attack. Monza pushes and comes close to 1-1 at 83’. It all starts again from a dangerous cross from the right where no defender intervenes in the area: on the second post Lucchesi emerges and shoots with his left foot, but Simic saves.
Bianco also plays the Petagna card for an ultra-offensive finale, but at 86’ Avellino finds the 2-0. Spectacular overhead kick by the new substitute Russo, sending Partenio into delirium. Monza does not give up and at 92’ they find the net with Álvarez, who intercepts Maric’s attempt, controls and scores with a sliding finish. It is the Uruguayan forward’s first goal in biancorossi colors. Bianco’s team believes and besieges the visitors’ area, but in the vibrant finale Avellino manages to secure the 2-1 victory.
In the next matchday the biancorossi will return to the U-Power Stadium to face Sampdoria on Saturday, September 20th at 5:15 PM.
