For the first time in their history, Monza won away at Torino. The biancorossi secured a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino thanks to a goal from Dany Mota, booking their place in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa, where they will face Milan at San Siro.
The match got off to a flying start, with Oristanio hitting the post at 1' after a favourable deflection. Once the scare had passed, former Juric’s side began to impose their style of play and create dangerous opportunities. At 8', Mangas cut inside and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot, which Perri tipped over for a corner. After Cacciamani sent a header wide, Monza began to threaten again, playing with quality and courage. At 26', Robinson produced a fine piece of skill inside the box, only to be denied at the last moment by the Torino defence. Monza’s efforts were rewarded at 33', when referee Perenzoni awarded the visitors a penalty for Fortini’s foul on Bakoune. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review due to an earlier offside position by Lucchesi. Monza did not lose confidence and at 42' they came close to scoring when Dany Mota rose highest and struck the crossbar with a header from Mangas’ perfectly delivered cross. Applause for Juric’s men, who deservedly found the breakthrough in first-half stoppage time. The scorer was Dany Mota, who beat Perri with a close-range toe-poke from Forson’s cross at 48', scoring his 41st goal for Monza on a night when he was also wearing the captain’s armband. Before the break, Torino threatened through Kulenovic, who headed wide at 50'. The second half also began with Monza on top, and less than two minutes in they came close to doubling their lead. Robinson raced forward on the counter-attack and picked out Mangas, who fired a powerful shot straight at goal, only to be denied by Perri. The Portuguese winger tried again at 57' with a superb left-footed effort that whistled just wide. Torino struggled to respond and break Monza’s dominance. At 70', Juric made a double substitution, bringing on Cutrone and Colpani. Monza continued to impress and at 73' came agonisingly close to a second goal. Robinson produced a superb curling right-footed effort that came crashing back off the post. At 76', Juric handed Ziolkowski his debut, with Birindelli also coming on. Monza were determined to put the game to bed and continued to press forward. Mangas tried his luck again with his right foot a minute later, but this time his effort was off target. After enduring a great deal of pressure, Torino finally created a chance at 79', when Zapata appeared at the far post and came close to turning the ball in for 1-1. Monza responded by threatening again at 82', with Colpani shooting from a good position, but Perri held on. Juric also handed Touré his debut. In the first of five minutes of added time, Cutrone controlled a long ball from deep and unleashed a left-footed effort that Perri saved once again. The number 10 tried again from the opposite side with his right foot, but the Torino goalkeeper was alert. It seemed the game was over, but at 93' Torino were awarded a penalty for a controversial close-range handball by Lucchesi. Once again, however, VAR intervened and the referee overturned his decision.
The match ended 1-0 to a superb Monza side, who advance to the next round and earn a last-16 clash against Milan at San Siro. The biancorossi will return to action on Sunday, September 6th at 3:00 PM away to Parma, on matchday three of Serie A.
