A spectacular Monza beat high-flying Cagliari 4-0 to secure their second consecutive home win, recording the biggest victory in their Serie A history and treating the ever-growing crowd at the Brianteo to a magnificent performance.
The match began evenly, but at 5' the first chance fell to the home side, with Dany Mota unleashing a powerful long-range shot that went wide. Cagliari responded at 16' with Romano's curling effort, which failed to find the target. The game began to open up. At 17', Dany Mota embarked on an extended solo run before shooting, but Caprile gathered the ball. The Sardinians hit back three minutes later when Nzola found himself one-on-one with Tornqvist after a through ball from Mendy, but the Swedish goalkeeper produced a superb save. Tornqvist was applauded for his efforts and was called into action again at 27', rushing off his line to stop Mendy's close-range shot. Monza remained positive and looked to exploit the flanks. At 29', Robinson delivered a dangerous cross that nearly resulted in Mina putting the ball into his own net. The goal that sent the more than ten thousand fans at the Brianteo into raptures arrived at 40'. Kouadio produced a fantastic burst of pace, latched onto Dany Mota's through ball and beat Caprile to score his first-ever Serie A goal. The counterattack began with a recovery by the defender, who had been called up to the national team by coach Mancini during the latest international break, before he raced down the right flank at tremendous speed. The lead gave Juric's side even more confidence, and they continued to press forward. At 44', Varela did well to hold up the ball inside the Cagliari penalty area and lay it off to Mangas, who was denied at the last moment by the visiting defence. Monza went into half-time leading 1-0.
The hosts came out of the dressing room looking much sharper and found a deserved second goal at 47'. The scorer was the ever-reliable Varela, who received Foe Ondoa's cross, controlled the ball and fired a right-footed shot across goal into the far corner. It was his fifth goal in seven Serie A appearances and his seventh of the season, sending the Curva Pieri into delirium. Cagliari attempted to respond through a promising run by Obert, but Goglichidze tracked back and produced a superb challenge to block his shot. The match remained firmly in Monza's hands, with the home side playing with confidence and entertaining the crowd. At 50', Dany Mota produced a stunning first touch on the wing, cut inside and shot at goal, but Caprile prevented the score from reaching 3-0. Cagliari appeared to be on the ropes, although at 62' Mina threatened with a header that Tornqvist pushed behind for a corner. Juric made his first substitution at 64', bringing on Colpani for a warmly applauded Dany Mota. Monza continued to attack and made it three at 66'. After scoring the second goal, Varela turned provider, playing a low through ball into Robinson's path. The English talent took advantage and beat Caprile with a right-footed finish. It was his second league goal of the season, making it 3-0 to Juric's rampant side. Monza had scored three goals against a Cagliari team that had conceded only three in their first six league matches. But the Monza show was far from over. At 72', the post denied Colpani a goal after he took aim and curled an almost perfect left-footed shot towards the far corner.
The fourth goal was merely delayed and arrived at 79'. Once again, Varela was in the right place at the right time, tapping the ball home after Robinson's shot had struck the post. It was the Monza number 9's second consecutive home brace, capping an unforgettable evening for the Club. Juric gave Varela a standing ovation as he left the pitch to make way for Cutrone, who came on alongside Bakoune. Cagliari tried to score at least a consolation goal, but Tornqvist remained unbeatable, even keeping out Kevin Carlos's powerful shot at 86'. Juric also gave Forson some playing time in the closing stages.
The match ended 4-0 to Monza, bringing Cagliari's impressive run to an abrupt halt and giving the home side a significant boost in the league standings, with President Lauren Crampsie watching on. In the next round, the biancorossi will travel to face Torino on Friday, 23rd October, at 8:45 PM.
