BOLOGNA COME FROM BEHIND AFTER VARELA’S NINTH GOAL TO WIN 2-1

On Matchday ten of Serie A, Bologna came from behind to beat Monza 2-1. The visitors had taken the lead through top scorer Varela’s ninth league goal of the season and then came close to making it 2-2, but Skorupski saved a penalty at 81'.

The hosts looked to make a strong start and at 1' Odgaard headed towards goal from inside the box, but failed to find the target. Monza responded with a driving run from Zeballos, who split the Bologna defence, before Theate brought down Dany Mota with a late challenge. Zanotti awarded a penalty, which was confirmed following a VAR review. Varela stepped up and, at 6', scored his fifth consecutive goal, his ninth in the league and eleventh of an already remarkable season. Bologna took some time to respond, struggling against Monza’s intensity and passing game. At 16', Odgaard latched onto Pobega’s assist and fired a powerful shot from close range, but Tornqvist produced a superb save. Moments later, Mangas did brilliantly to deny Bernardeschi’s follow-up attempt. Monza remained dangerous on the counterattack, but Bologna drew level at 33'. From Miranda’s corner, Pobega struck a perfectly timed first-time volley with his left foot, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The rossoblu, managed by former Monza coach Palladino, grew in confidence and at 43' Tornqvist denied Ferguson’s close-range effort, following a cross from Bernardeschi. The teams went into the break level at 1-1.

Juric brought on Robinson at the start of the second half. The first chance came at 50', when Birindelli's long-range right-footed effort was comfortably saved by Skorupski after a good move from Monza. The match remained lively and increasingly heated as the minutes went by. At 58', following a VAR review, Zanotti awarded Bologna a penalty for Lucchesi’s shirt pull inside the box. Bernardeschi stepped up and completed the comeback at 59'. Juric made a double substitution at 66', bringing on Mout and Touré, who made his first Serie A appearance of the season. Monza remained firmly in the game, and the Croatian coach introduced Cutrone and Ngonge at 71'. The visitors continued to push forward and at 80', after another VAR review, Zanotti awarded the third penalty of the match for Zortea’s handball following Robinson’s cross. Cutrone took responsibility from the spot, but Skorupski pulled off a superb save to preserve Bologna’s lead. Monza refused to give up and continued to attack during the six minutes of added time. At 93', Ngonge struck a right-footed volley, sending the ball narrowly over the bar. Bologna also looked to put the game beyond doubt, but Mbangula failed to follow up his hat-trick against Milan and fired well wide when through on goal at 95'. Monza still had one more opportunity, with Cutrone coming close to an equaliser with a right-footed effort at 96'. At the Dall'Ara, Bologna held on to claim a 2-1 victory.

In the next round, Monza will host Atalanta on Sunday, 8th November, at 3:00 PM at the Brianteo Stadium.
